Effect Of Solution Focused Therapy On Mathematics Performance Of Senior Secondary School Sctudent In Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract


The study investigated the effect of Solution Focused Therapy on Mathematics performance of Senior secondary school students. Sixty Senior secondary school 2 (SSS 2) students were used for the study. The research adopted a pretest-posttest and control group quasi experimental design with a 2x2 factorial matrix. Two schools were randomly selected from two difference local government area in Ibadan. 30 participants each were randomly selected for the treatment and control group from the two schools selected. The major instruments used for the study were mathematics anxiety scale and mathematic performance test. The data were analysed with the aid of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) tested at 0.05 level of significance. The finding indicate that the participant exposed to Solution Focused Therapy showed a significant improvement in their mathematics performance than those in control group. Also, it was found that mathematics anxiety when not properly managed has a significant negative effect on mathematics performance of students. It is recommended that Solution Focused Therapy should be used by the counselling psychologist to intensify their effort to make use of the intervention in their strategies for counselling.
