Competitiveness of Indian Agriculture: A Case Study of Tea, Cashew and Spices

Abstract


The present study is an attempt to analyze the tea, cashew and spices competitiveness of Indian agriculture under WTO regime. It is found that NPC and EPC have been easy indicators of the price movements and direction of trading i.e. at which prices, it was advisable to export and when it was advisable to import. As far as performance of Indian agricultural commodities is concerned, we find that spices, tea and cashew had been having considerable competitiveness in the international market. These commodities had more of exports than imports for most of the period under this study. In total, it is concluded that Indian agriculture is getting competitive advantage in international trade provided it needs more structured and sophisticated information sharing system in place and improved infrastructure for handling of surplus stocks.
