Agricultural Productivity and Socio-Economic Condition of Farmers in India

Kuldeep Hooda

Abstract

The foundation of India is very much laid upon the agrarian society. Even today a large part of the economy is based on the agriculture sector and is one of the largest contributing sectors to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Agricultural productivity is therefore a crucial determinant of the economy of India. Agricultural productivity is deeply linked with the conditions of farmers. However, it is noteworthy here that a high agricultural productivity does not necessary guarantee a better socio economic condition of the farmers. It has been seen in Madhya Pradesh recently. Madhya Pradesh was awarded for a high yield in agriculture but the rise in no of suicide by farmers in the state shows a different picture. This led to violent protests by farmers at various states like Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana etc. The present socio economic conditions of farmers in India are very poor. The land size for yielding crop is very less and this leads to piling of debt upon farmers. Also, other factors like delayed monsoon, change in temperature further add to their woes. All this has led to farmer suicides in large numbers and many peasant movements have begun as a result.
