Abstract

Road accidents, particularly motorcycle accidents, have not only become a normal and re-occurring phenomenon in developing countries but equally constitute a major emerging public health problem in Nigeria  and contribute significantly to the overall road traffic injuries. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents which cause injuries and death have not received the adequate attention deserved as the situation is worsening in our major cities. These eventually made this paper to appraise the contributing factors of motorcycle accidents in Ado-Ekiti. The study designed 460 questionnaires to collect primary data from 460 samples, representing 10 percent of the commercial motorcycle operators in the study area. The secondary data were also collected from Ekiti State Teaching Hospital. The collected data were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics analysis of simple frequency percentage and regression analysis. The result of Findings revealed that the annual increase in rate of commercial motorcycle accident is as a result of many factors which include lack of training exposure, poor physical environment together with population growth including the manner of Okada riders. On this note, the training and retraining of motorcycle riders should be encouraged while the segregation of cyclist route from arterials will go a long way in reducing motorcycle accidents.
